Abu Hamid al-Ghazali matters today, after nearly a thousand years, because of his scholarship but also because of his crisis. Ghazali had been well-established as the premier scholar in law and theology, occupying the most-coveted seat of academia, at the Nizamiyya University in Baghdad. He had veneration, prestige, status, wealth, and a great mind. He was the monarch of intellectuals.
It is also known that René Descartes' ideas from his book called Discourse on the Method were influenced by Ghazali and very much similar to Ghazali's work. Al-Ghazali's famous book Ihyaa' 'Uloom Al-Din, or simply Al-Ihya (Revival of Religious Sciences), is still read today after 900 years and a very popular book among Muslims.
On the Intellect, its Noble Nature, its Definition, and its Divisions. You should not neglect your time or use it haphazardly; on the contrary you should bring yourself to account, structure your litanies and other practices during each day and night, and assign to each period a fixed and specific function. This is how to bring out the spiritual blessing (baraka) in each period.
But if you leave yourself adrift, aimlessly wandering as cattle do, not knowing how to occupy yourself at every moment, your time will be lost. It is nothing other than your life, and your life is the capital that you make use of to reach perpetual felicity in the proximity of God the Exalted.

What good is an increase in wealth when life grows ever shorter? Therefore be joyous only for an increase in knowledge or in good works, for they are your two companions who will accompany you in your grave when your family, wealth, children and friends stay behind. P.S.
In the bloom of my life, from the time I reached puberty before I was twenty until now, when I am over fifty, I have constantly been diving daringly into the depth of this profound sea and wading into its deep water like a bold man, not like a cautious coward. I would penetrate far into every mazy difficulty. I would scrutinize …!” (Freedom and Fulfillment, p. 62) " Hamid al-Ghazali (450-505 AH/1058-1111 AD)
