I have heard speculation that McCain's speech may have been tailored not to those who already support the ticket, and not to those who already oppose the ticket, but to those who didn't really know the ticket. For those who did not know much about McCain, it was probably very informative. For McCain to go for the same kind of oratory that Palin was able to pull off would have been a mistake. I have never seen him as a rousing speaker, so to try and fail so immediately after Palin would have been a real disaster. I don't know if that is true, but it sounds plausible.
