Subject: WHY ?

A mother asked President Bush,

"Why did my son have to die in Iraq?"

Another mother asked President Kennedy,

"Why did my son have to die in Viet Nam?"

Another mother asked President Truman,

"Why did my son have to die in Korea?

Another mother asked President F.D. Roosevelt,

"Why did my son have to die at Iwo Jima?"

Another mother asked President W. Wilson,

"Why did my son have to die on the battlefield of France?"

Yet another mother asked President Lincoln,

"Why did my son have to die at Gettysburg?"

And yet another mother asked President G. Washington,

"Why did my son have to die near Valley Forge?"

Then long, long ago, a mother asked...

"Heavenly Father, why did my Son have to die on a cross outside of
Jerusalem?"

The answers to all these are similar --

"So that others may have life and dwell in peace, happiness and
freedom."

This was emailed to me with no author and I thought the magnitude and the
simplicity of the message were awesome ...

good one, airman.

I've read it before but am just as touched now. I pray that the freedoms (I hope with accompanying responsibilities) that are enjoyed now because of their sacrifices, will be appreciated everlastingly.

I am reminded of the sacrificies of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.


Five were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine died from wounds or hardships of the War.


Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well-educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vadals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged Gen. George Washington to open fire. The home ws destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill was laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

The premise in the initial post inevitably leads to the conclusion that wars are a tremendously beneficial thing to mankind. Because they ensure that "others may have life and dwell in peace, happiness and freedom."

Come on. You can't be serious.

It's good if you stand behind your troops.
But let's be aware that by such a carte blanche any would-be warlords are being assisted in a massive way.
Wars tend to create infinitely more sorrow than relief. With very few exceptions.

while i understand the message, i do not feel that the comparison of battles is valid.
that is the reason WHY so many others should be asking the president
and all others responsible for the iraqi occupation
WHY?

the fact of the matter is, we're there for the oil.
the reality can be dressed up and glazed over and ignored and censored until the end of time
but thats the truth.
the sad truth.

the troops are doing their duty. i believe that.
they do a selfless thing for the betterment of a selfish few.

RunSaber .... do tell, when did Iraq atack the US? I can think of now two different wars where it was the other way, but not one single Iraqie attack on the US. Did we miss something? Where and when did Iarqie troops land in the United States?

I can answer that, never ever did Iraq atack the Untied States, not once. Sure they attacked troops on thier native soil, but it was thier country, not the Americans. I am just very very interested to know when Saddam's forces made headway in to the United States. damn I hate missing the news *LOL*There is always some madness in love. I take it that the purpose of this category is the support of the military. Do you think that those of you who would post comments attacking the military could do it in another area, out of a sense of basic decorum if nothing else, perhaps NHB Politics where you can smear the military to your black and grey hearts' content?

this thread was political from the start. If a general ok is given to all past wars the U.S. has ever been involved in, and if it implies a preemptive ok also to all future wars, it is a highly political statement. Why should such a statement be granted a protective decorum? Apart from the fact that a discussion board is there for people to discuss, not to hail.

maybe its important to remember, that in the US at least,our soldiers do not pick an choose the wars, they do not even actively participate in the political process (something that is rare in just about any nations history) they do what our elected officials tell them to do, WE THE PEOPLE elect into office our leaders, you got a beef with the wars that are fought, look to who you elect.


before you blame the soldiers on the ground, and the military in general, remember when people were shouting "something must be done" and next time you before shouting "something must be done" be it in dufar, lebanon, vietnam, N. korea, make sure that you are going to follow up and support your crys when mothers are greiving thier sons, and daughters.
